Strip Morphologies by Zubin Khabazi (2011)

"After Weaving structures and Porous Shell Systems as generative design experiments, the third of the series ‘Generative Algorithms, Concepts and Experiments’ focused on Strip morphologies as a light weight material system for design. I hope this topic would be useful as a technique / system and be ‘Generative’ for your design purposes"

Generative Algorithms: Porous Shell by Zubin M Khabazi (2011)

Introduction by Zubin Khabazi
The idea behind the ‘Generative Algorithms, Concepts and Experiments’ is to explore design and algorithmic solutions through experiments rather than pure geometrical/algorithmic subjects. Using current design problems or ongoing researches, here the development of such subjects pursued with a parametric approach in Grasshopper/Rhino Environment.
This book is a part of a research that was accomplished as a master thesis in Architectural Association, Emergent Technologies and Design course under supervision of Michael Hensel, Mike Weinstock and Achim Menges. In this research, full study of a natural system combined with algorithmic solutions in form-finding techniques to develop an algorithmic design tool. Here just a brief summary of research plus its algorithmic parts reflected. The research titled ‘Algorithmic Morphogenesis’ which generally investigated the field of form generation in algorithmic/digital spaces based on natural processes of form generation in natural organisms.

Algoritmi Generativi by Zubin Khabazi (Italian Version 2011)

Patrick S. Schumacher: The Autopoiesis of Architecture Vol 1

"(...) Grasshopper seems to be winning out in the competitive struggle for domination as the preferred tool for scripting -at least in the avant-garde segment of the discipline- both on the diagrammatic level as well as on the level of concrete modelling. The great advantange of Grasshopper is that it transposes most of the scripting syntax into graphic network language. The system of parametric dependencies that organizes the internal variability and differentiation of the model can now be configured and manipulated via a second order diagram that controls the first order diagram or model. The fact that this new, crucial domain on design decisions -the choise and elaboration of systematic correlations between the variable elements of the design- is now brought back into the  ambit of architecture's specialized medium of communication is perhaps the precondition for full-blown proliferation of parametric scripting techniques within archtiecture and the design disciplines." Grasshopper Stories With David Rutten and AA Students

      Link to video
      Computing Architectural Concepts: David Rutten/Grasshopper
      12 May, 2010, 13:00-15:00 :: Running time: 90 mins
‘Can the dichotomy between obsessive tooling and strong design agenda be overcome? Can innovative software like Grasshopper be the ideal platform to marry computation, creativity and ecologic thinking? What can be done to accelerate the process?’
This lecture by Grasshopper developer David Rutten and some of his independent collaborators will engage with these questions, introducing the history and ideas behind this novel parametric modelling software as well as some of its experimental future plug-ins operating at the borderline of geometry, mathematics, physics and biology.
The lecture has been curated by Marco Poletto (Inter10 Unit Master) and is part of the Advanced Conceptual Design Workshop series held by ecoLogicStudio in London.

Generative Algorithms by Zubin Khabazi (2010)

© 2010 Zubin Mohamad Khabazi This book produced and published digitally for public use. No part of this book may be reproduced in any manner whatsoever without permission from the author, except in the context of reviews.
"This new edition of previously ‘Algorithmic Modelling’ and now ‘Generative Algorithms’ is prepared due to my worldwide Grasshopper friends’ questions and correspondence and also changes which were happened in Plug-in. Since Grasshopper is a work-in-progress project and improves and changes rapidly, it seems necessary to upgrade the book in this moment (and I am not totally sure by the time you receive it, another upgrade is needed or not!). You should consider that most of the experiments have been done by previous versions of the plug-in but I tried to update them wherever needed and I am sure that if you faced any difference, you can find your way through. The main concept of the book is to focus on some geometrical and architectural problems and projects and to develop the understanding of Generative Algorithms, parametric modelling, based on design experiments instead of describing pure math or geometry. To do so, in most cases I assumed that you already know the basic understanding of ingredients of discussions and I would not go through the definition of the ‘degree of a curve’ although I will touch some, whenever necessary."

Basic maths for Grasshopper: Degrees to Radians by Xan Maning

This is just a tip for people who are starting out with Grasshopper for Rhinoceros and are not particularly from a math background. There is a primer for maths in Grasshopper written by Rajaa Issa called “Essential Mathematics for Computational Design” which is excellent but it is teaching to a level that is equivalent to A-Level mathematics in the UK. To get the most out of Grasshopper you ideally need to be at this level, especially when working with vectors and going into VB scripting however it is something you can pick up with the help of such great primers.
