Grasshopper Stories With David Rutten and AA Students

Link to video
Computing Architectural Concepts: David Rutten/Grasshopper
12 May, 2010, 13:00-15:00 :: Running time: 90 mins
‘Can the dichotomy between obsessive tooling and strong design agenda be overcome? Can innovative software like Grasshopper be the ideal platform to marry computation, creativity and ecologic thinking? What can be done to accelerate the process?’
This lecture by Grasshopper developer David Rutten and some of his independent collaborators will engage with these questions, introducing the history and ideas behind this novel parametric modelling software as well as some of its experimental future plug-ins operating at the borderline of geometry, mathematics, physics and biology.
The lecture has been curated by Marco Poletto (Inter10 Unit Master) and is part of the Advanced Conceptual Design Workshop series held by ecoLogicStudio in London.

Generative Algorithms by Zubin Khabazi (2010)

© 2010 Zubin Mohamad Khabazi This book produced and published digitally for public use. No part of this book may be reproduced in any manner whatsoever without permission from the author, except in the context of reviews.
"This new edition of previously ‘Algorithmic Modelling’ and now ‘Generative Algorithms’ is prepared due to my worldwide Grasshopper friends’ questions and correspondence and also changes which were happened in Plug-in. Since Grasshopper is a work-in-progress project and improves and changes rapidly, it seems necessary to upgrade the book in this moment (and I am not totally sure by the time you receive it, another upgrade is needed or not!). You should consider that most of the experiments have been done by previous versions of the plug-in but I tried to update them wherever needed and I am sure that if you faced any difference, you can find your way through. The main concept of the book is to focus on some geometrical and architectural problems and projects and to develop the understanding of Generative Algorithms, parametric modelling, based on design experiments instead of describing pure math or geometry. To do so, in most cases I assumed that you already know the basic understanding of ingredients of discussions and I would not go through the definition of the ‘degree of a curve’ although I will touch some, whenever necessary."

Basic maths for Grasshopper: Degrees to Radians by Xan Maning

This is just a tip for people who are starting out with Grasshopper for Rhinoceros and are not particularly from a math background. There is a primer for maths in Grasshopper written by Rajaa Issa called “Essential Mathematics for Computational Design” which is excellent but it is teaching to a level that is equivalent to A-Level mathematics in the UK. To get the most out of Grasshopper you ideally need to be at this level, especially when working with vectors and going into VB scripting however it is something you can pick up with the help of such great primers. Essential Mathematics For Computational Design By Rajaa Issa (2010)

Essential Mathematics for Computational Design introduces design professionals to foundation mathematical concepts that are necessary for effective development of computational methods for 3D modeling and computer graphics. This is not meant to be a complete and comprehensive resource, but rather an overview of the basic and most commonly used concepts. PDF
